Perhaps one of the most well known restaurants in the world is Tavern on the Green NYC. Although it’s been around since 1870, Tavern on the Green, as you know it today, was not functioning until 1934. At that time New Yorkers embraced it as a welcome addition to Central Park and a wonderful gathering place. Prior to its opening as a restaurant, it was home to 200 sheep that grazed throughout Central Park. It worked well in this capacity, however it was felt that this beautiful Victorian structure should serve a different purpose. So, the Parks Commissioner, Robert Moses, sent the sheep to Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and had workers immediately start on converting the sheepfold to its new function, a restaurant.
Over the years Tavern on the Green NYC went through renovations and a number of management changes. When it was felt that it no longer kept up with the times its doors were closed in 1974. However, when Warner LeRoy took over the lease to the building he embarked on a $10 million renovation and Tavern on the Green NYC was reborn in 1976. It was to go through yet another renovation in 1988. Today the restaurant is more than a stylish and sophisticated place to dine. It has become a rich part of New York City history.
